Swift Student Challenge winner, 2025

Tremor Check

Built for my grandfather.

Tremor Check measures vocal tremor and fine-motor control in people with Parkinson's, entirely on device. It won Apple's 2025 Swift Student Challenge.

I built it for my grandfather, who carried a binder to every appointment to log his symptoms by hand. I wanted to give him something easier, and more dignified.

You repeat a few phrases, then hold a finger still. The app scores both, keeps the history, and makes a PDF to hand to the doctor.

SwiftUI, SwiftData, Speech, Accelerate, ARKit, PDFKit, Swift Charts
Test results: a hand stability score of 78.2 out of 100, with jitter and shimmer for each spoken phrase.
Analytics: line charts of hand stability, voice jitter and voice shimmer over a month.
The start of a check, explaining the phrase test and the finger test.

How it is built

What it listens for

Jitter, shimmer, harmonic-to-noise ratio and pitch entropy, taken from 30 millisecond frames of each phrase with outliers removed.

A finger test

Hold a finger still on the screen and the app turns the drift into a stability score out of 100.

Something to hand the doctor

Every check is kept, charted by week, month and year, and exported as a PDF report.

See the voice box

A 3D model of the larynx shows which muscles and ligaments the tests are measuring.
